Land of Ice
This week we had the opportunity to learn about the Land of Ice. We talked about the characteristics of the weather, animals that may live on or under ice, and how they adapt to their environment. We specifically talked about penguins; their thick fur/fat, the color transformation from a young penguin to an adult, and also about the fact that the penguin is the only bird that cannot fly. We then created "mosaic penguins" where we used a paper ripping technique. We loved this mini unit!
Welcome To Our Patch
To get in the spirit of fall, our class has been reading some fun pumpkin books. We learned about the life-cycle of a pumpkin, we read about a GIANT pumpkin, and we are soon going to experiment with the insides of pumpkins! With so much pumpkin talk, we decided to create our own "carved" pumpkins! Below are some student examples.
The Four Seasons
All of Dilworth's first graders had the opportunity to learn about the four seasons. We talked about when the season occurs, what type of weather we see outside, what kind of clothing we wear during that specific season, and most importantly... TREES! My class was able to watch a time-lapse of a full year of the same tree. We were able to see the changes of each season right before our eyes, which was VERY cool for the students. Below are the four season trees we created.
Good Sentences
This past week we learned what entails a good sentence. Students have learned that a good sentence must (1) name who or what you are writing about, (2) tell something about the person or thing, and (3) use capital letters and end marks correctly. The students were then to write a good sentence or two with a picture of something they like. I loved this activity because I got to see some of the interests of my children (great way to get funds of knowledge!) as well as see their creative little minds at work. I love the different ideas they came up with.
"I like bacon. Because it's good."
"I like to go outside. It is fun."
"I like Halloween. I'm a witch for Halloween."
Pledge Of Allegiance
Today, we learned the Pledge Of Allegiance and about the American Flag. We did a "cut and paste" activity to complete the Pledge of Allegiance and we also created our own flags. The students came up with very creative ideas for their own flags such as "Lego Flag" and "Pony Flag." Some students even drew their home country's flag i.e. Bosnia. Below is a "Nature Flag" and an image of the "cut and paste" activity we did.
Name Expression
Students were given an outline of their name to decorate. They used colors and designs to express themselves.
