From the Principal
Dear Parents,
This Thursday, December 11th, we are excited to host members of the Utah State Legislature for a
Beverly Taylor Sorensen Arts Program Gallery Stroll. The Beverly Taylor Sorensen Arts Program
(BTS) provides major funding for our art teacher, Julie Davidson, and for the arts program at
Dilworth. Having legislators here in our school is a tremendous opportunity to show how well core
curriculum is integrated into art instruction at Dilworth. It also provides us with a chance to express
our support of the BTS arts funding and our desire for continued support from the state. Please join
us on Thursday, December 11th , from 6:00 to 7:30 PM and help show the support the Dilworth
community has for the arts!

WINTER GALLERY ART STROLL
Thursday, December 11
6:00-7:30 p.m.
4th and 6th graders will be singing at 6:00 p.m.
Our school’s art teacher, Julie Davidson, is fiercely dedicated to integrating all art pieces with each
individual classroom curriculum so that core subjects are being reinforced through the arts. She
understands what the curriculum is for each grade and specializes her art instruction to strengthen
the core basics.
We need to do our part to advocate for the Beverly Taylor Sorenson (BTS) Art Program and let
legislators know how important it is to keep the Arts Program in our school. With the help of you, our
community members, and the legislators, we can ensure the BTS program continues to receive
funding and get the vote in our legislature that it needs to continue.
At the Winter Art Gallery Stroll, we have an opportunity to meet with our legislators and share our
thoughts and passion on keeping the Arts in our school. The students have done an incredible job in
their art projects this year. This is a great opportunity for us to come and show community support!
The BTS Program is truly one of a kind! Come and support Dilworth and BTS!
Please come to admire the art pieces, support BTS and talk with legislators!
Cookies, hot chocolate and winter notecards available for purchase! Cash and checks accepted.
All proceeds go to support the Arts at Dilworth!
Congratulations
We sincerely congratulate Jane Erickson, Luke Harmston, and Eliza Randle on the awards they
received in the 6th grade Reflections contest at Hillside Middle School. Their submissions will go on to
regional competition. Congratulations and good luck, 6th graders!

Dear Dilworth Parents,
We hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving break. Due to the colder weather, more parents are
driving their children to school instead of having them walk. This is causing some additional
congestion in the parking lots, drop off areas and the streets immediately around Dilworth. We ask
that you please drive slowly in the parking lots/drop areas and that you follow the traffic and parking
signs. The safety of your children is paramount. Over the past several weeks we have had some
near accidents in the parking lot as parents, who were driving too fast, almost hit students. Please
help us keep your children safe by driving slowly and safely in the parking lots and in the streets
around Dilworth.

6:00-8:00 p.m.
The people responsible for awarding our Beverly Taylor Sorenson Grant for the arts (half of our
art fund for a year) have requested a winter art exhibit at Dilworth. State legislators have been invited
to this exhibit event in an effort to show how schools are benefitting from the grant money. As an Arts
Council, we wanted to also show how much our community supports the use of this money and felt
the best way to get FAMILIES to attend and show their support is to have the 4th and 6th graders
singing songs at 6:00 p.m.
"SWIG" sugar cookies, hot cocoa and winter art cards will be for sale (art was selected
from 6th grade art). Cash and checks will be accepted that night. We WILL NOT be able to accept
credit cards that night.
Please plan to come and support our ART COMMUNITY as part of your holiday schedule.

Dilworth Dingoes!! THANK YOU all so much for donating winter clothing. We filled countless bags
with your donations and got the clothes to their destination just in time for the snow to come. Your
generosity helped so many people in need, and we know that they are very thankful for the warm
clothing. Your small act of kindness helped others enjoy their winter this year!

Dear Dilworth Parents,
By now you may have noticed some changes to the parking lot located on the south end of the
building. This past weekend the district created a car-to-curb drop off lane over the parking stalls that
are closest to the tennis courts. Between the hours of 7AM to 4PM there will be no parking in the
drop off lane. We know that losing 15 parking spots could be an inconvenience, but we believe the
new drop off lane will help better ensure the safety of our children during the busy times before and
after school. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Dear Parents,
I want to express my appreciation for all the tremendous support you give Dilworth Elementary School. Last week we had parents and neighbors come to see the 1st and 4th grade perform their fall programs. Many people came to the school for the Halloween parade and to help with classroom celebrations. On any given day, we have anywhere from 10 to 30 parents in the building volunteering in classrooms and helping our teachers. Thank You! Your support is invaluable and is a major reason why Dilworth is such a fantastic school.
Because we are approaching the time of year when the air quality can become poor, we wanted to remind you, if you have not already, to please contact the school if your child is sensitive to poor air quality. That way we can make sure he/she is inside when necessary. Of course, when the air quality is very poor (particulate matter levels above 90 us/m3) all students will be kept inside for recess. If you have any questions, please contact the school office.
Sincerely,
Jared Wright

Dear Dilworth Parents & Guardians,
Happy Halloween! We are looking forward to our annual Halloween parade this Friday. It will begin at approximately 8:45 and will arrive in the auditorium sometime after 9:00 a.m. We ask that parents coming to see the parade be seated in the auditorium, rather than blocking the hallways. Please be sure that costumes are modest, not excessively scary or gory, and that there are no weapons of any kind. Dilworth is a school with small children and we need to be sure that students of all ages feel safe and secure while at school. Here’s to a safe and happy Halloween!

From the Principal
Sincerely,
Jared Wright

Happy Halloween! Parade begins at 9:00 a.m. From the Principal Dear Dilworth Parents & Guardians, Just before the school year began the district changed its policy on receipting lunch money. This change moved the process of receipting cash and checks from the lunch room to the front office. As a result we asked you to use the online meal payment program to help us minimize the impact of this change on our office staff. Many of you have responded by using the online meal payment system, which we sincerely appreciate.Unfortunately, we need to make some additional adjustments to our procedure for receipting lunch money in order to further minimize the disruption.Beginning today, October 21, 2014, we will have a designated person in the office from 8:15 to 8:45AM to receipt lunch money.Teachers will no longer be allowed to take lunch money from your student or from you.All lunch money will need to be turned into the office, preferably between 8:15 and 8:45 in the morning.Of course if this time frame does not work for you, we will accommodate you during our regular office hours. We sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation as we implement these new procedures. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly. Grandparents’ Day
On Wednesday, Oct. 8, and Thursday, Oct. 9, we invite grandparents to have lunch with their grandchildren at Dilworth and to visit our Book Fair. The plan is for grandparents of students with last names beginning with A-L come on Wednesday during the lunch hour and those with students whose last name begins with M-Z come on Thursday.** If grandparents want to eat school lunch, they must come to the office to pay their $3.25 with cash or check – no credit cards!! They will receive a receipt which they take to the cafeteria to show proof of payment. They may not charge their lunch to a student’s account. To speed up the lunch line process, we suggest that grandparents bring their own lunch or pay ahead of time in the office so they don’t have to stand in line twice that day. We look forward to having these special visitors to our school and hope they enjoy the time with their grandchildren.
Preventing Underage Drinking is as easy as 1-2-3
Did you know alcohol is the #1 substance abused by Utah’s youth? It’s true, and many parents are also surprised to hear some kids are drinking as early as grade school. Raising children is challenging, yet it can be so rewarding! Consider the following three-step recipe to help keep kids alcohol-free:
1. Bonding – can be as simple as going out and having fun together, helping with homework, talking about school, and making time each day to listen to your child’s concerns.
2. Boundaries - Children say parental disapproval of underage drinking is the number one reason they choose not to drink. Parents, it’s important to set and communicate clear no underage drinking rules.
3. Monitoring – At some level, most kids appreciate parental monitoring. It’s very real proof their parents love them enough to care about their well-being.
Parental involvement drops in half between the 6th and 12th grades. Although this is a normal and healthy part of growing up, it’s also a critical time to remain involved in their lives.

Our Book Fair will be in the school library on October 8 and 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on October 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. You can make your purchases with cash, check or credit card. This is a great opportunity to help fund our AR reading program while you can get great books for Christmas, birthdays, or just for fun. Hope to see you there!
Grandparents’ Day
On Wednesday, Oct. 8, and Thursday, Oct. 9, we invite grandparents to have lunch with their grandchildren at Dilworth and to visit our Book Fair. The plan is for grandparents of students with last names beginning with A-L come on Wednesday during the lunch hour and those with students whose last name begins with M-Z come on Thursday. To speed up the lunch line process, we suggest that grandparents bring their own lunch to the cafeteria to eat with their grandchildren. We look forward to having these special visitors to our school and hope they enjoy the time with their grandchildren.
Congratulations
At the Epilepsy Association of Utah's 2014 Community Service Awards Gala, Dilworth student Bertrand Might (first grade, Noreen Mullen's class) received the Purple Star Award for Outstanding Youth Advocate for "Outstanding service to the people of Utah". Bertrand was also featured in two major international publications this summer: The New Yorker magazine and the German newspaper Der Spiegel, http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/07/21/one-of-a-kind-2.
Congratulations, Bertrand!

Dear Dilworth Parents-
It’s hard to believe how fast this year is going. I have really enjoyed getting to know your students over the past month and appreciate your level of support and engagement in their education.
Here are two important items:
*Last week a student was run over by a bicycle on the playground by another student. Fortunately the victim was not seriously injured. We ask that you help us maintain a safe environment by reminding your student that if they ride a bike or a scooter to school they need get off their bike and/or scooter when they get to the school grounds.
*Parent Teacher Conferences are just around the corner. We are excited to introduce a new online scheduler that will allow you to make appointments with your student’s teacher electronically. Information with directions on how to use the program will be sent home within the next few days. The scheduler can be accessed via our school website @ dilworth.slcschools.org.
Thanks again for all of your tremendous support of Dilworth. To keep up-to-date with what's happening at the school, please visit our website @ dilworth.slcschools.org.
Sincerely,
Jared Wright

Our fall fundraiser kicked off last Wednesday and we are excited to be partnering with Great American again to offer a variety of magazines, gifts and wrapping paper. 50% (40% of magazines) of the funds raised will go directly to our school to help pay for our arts, music, and physical education programs, as well as other school supported student activities such as field trips and field day. We are lucky to have access to these wonderful programs here at Dilworth and they wouldn't be possible without your support of our fundraising efforts. We are also welcoming direct donations, in any amount, which also allow your student to be eligible for the great prize program, including a limo lunch! (every $10 direct donation = 1 item sold). Your direct donation checks can be made out to the Dilworth PTA and dropped off in the office or enclosed in the fundraiser envelope that went home with each student. The fundraiser deadline is Wednesday, October 1st. Thank you for your support!
Reflections
It is time to get your artistic juices flowing for the 2014-2015 Reflections entries. Use your creative minds to create original artwork to be submitted for this year’s theme, "The World Would Be A Better Place If..." Rules, Forms and Guidelines will be in the office in a Reflections Binder, online at www.utahpta.org/reflections and soon on Dilworth's own website. Be sure to follow all rules exactly and complete all required forms. FYI...the artist statement is very important as it is used to determine which art entry best portrays the theme and is also used in tie breaker situations. Have fun and we look forward to seeing your wonderful submissions!
Entries will be due Thursday, October 23rd

Volunteers Needed
Our school library needs a volunteer to help on Tuesday afternoons from 1:10 to 3:10 p.m. to help first grade students learn library procedures (checking in and checking out books). Please call the school office (801-481-4806) if you’re interested.
We also would like to have volunteers who know how to play chess to help the chess club on Fridays from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. If you can help, please call the school office.
News from School Nurse
As you have probably heard, a number of children in our area, are experiencing serious respiratory infections caused by the Enterovirus 68D. Numerous children throughout our area, and nationally, have and will require hospitalization. Please see the attached information that will be beneficial in recognizing and preventing the spread of the illness in our schools.
I think that focusing on promoting and maintaining healthy classrooms is especially important. So please remember the following:
Practice good, and frequent hand washing for teachers/staff and students, at all times, especially after changing diapers, wiping noses etc…
Send children home with persistent coughs and running nose, with other symptoms of illness. Younger children especially as they cannot contain either of them, and this is how the infection is spread.
Send children home if they appear or have symptoms of not being well.

Principal’s Message
Dear parents,
Recently there have been a lot of questions concerning news reports of severe respiratory illness among children in several states. Here is some advice from our school nurse to help your children avoid infection. In addition, we have posted the notice about the virus from the Utah Department of Health on our web site at dilworth.slcschools.org.
Advice to parents
Parents should know that the best way to avoid EV-D68 infection is frequent hand washing, especially after contact with nasal secretions or diapers, avoiding sharing utensils with people who are sick and disinfection of frequently touched surfaces. Children with a history of asthma should have an asthma plan and follow it. Most children with cold symptoms are not going to get severely ill. Parents should be alert to wheezing or difficulty breathing and seek medical attention if their children have these symptoms. Patients with- or parents of children with underlying lung problems like asthma or history of wheezing, should be especially vigilant.
Sincerely,
Jared Wright

We will have a fundraiser assembly for the students on Wednesday to explain what we need them to do. It is the same as last year - wrapping paper, etc. We do not want them to sell door to door, for safety reasons. They should only contact people they know. The packets with information and order forms will go home with the students thus Friday, Sept. 19. Thanks for your help with our fundraiser!

Counselor's Corner
I hope that all of you are settling in nicely with the new school year here at Dilworth. It's so much fun to see all of the student's back at school, excited about learning and being with their friends. Hopefully everyone is once again getting into the routine of early to bed and early to rise. Keeping children on a regular bedtime schedule, especially during the school year, will help a great deal when it comes to waking them early to get them ready for school. If they're already in the habit, it can make it much easier to get them up in the mornings and get them here on time! We need to remember that children need plenty of sleep in order to come to school and be ready to learn. I also wanted to mention that if I worked with your child last year during the school year, and you would like me to begin meeting with them again this year, I will need to have you sign another permission form. If you could give me a call or drop me an email, we could catch up on how the summer was and arrange for me to begin meeting with them once again. For those parents who are not familiar with school counselors, we do a number of different things in your child's school. I do everything from classroom lessons to working individually with children regarding a number of different issues. Please do not hesitate to call me or stop in and see me if you have any questions about what school counselors do and if I can possibly help your child. I am here to assist children in having a positive experience with school and to work through any struggles they may be having. I am at Dilworth on Tuesday's, Thursday's and rotating Fridays. I hope that everyone has a wonderful 2014-2015 school year!!

Principal’s Message
I would first like to thank the PTA for organizing such a fantastic movie night last week. Our PTA plays such an important role in supporting the school, and every student at Dilworth benefits from their great efforts.
Parents, please remember to drive safely around the school and in the parking lots before and after school. We have over 600 students this year which can make things a little congested in the streets and in the pick-up/drop-off areas around the building. In the south parking lot, please do not park in the parking stalls located on the east end of the lot (closest to the tennis courts). When those stalls are open it allows you pull right up next to the side walk so that your children can get in and out of the car without crossing traffic.
Thank you to all of those who have been using the online meal payment program to pay for school lunch. If you still need assistance with getting access to the program, please contact to the school. To keep in touch with all the happening at Dilworth, please visit our school web site at http://dilworth.slcschools.org.
Sincerely,
Jared Wright

I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome you have given me. Dilworth is a great school with an incredible faculty and wonderfully supportive community. I consider it a great privilege to be part of this community and I am looking forward to a great school year. Please remember to pay for your school meals online if at all possible. New district procedures have given the responsibility of receiving lunch money to the school secretary. We all know how wonderful and busy Carolyn is taking care of the entire school. The process she has to go through to receipt money adds hours to her already full day. To pay online for school meals, you need your student's ID number (or lunch number) which can be provided by your student's teacher or by calling the school. Once you have the number, visit https://www.mypaymentsplus.com to sign up and make a payment. It took me less than 5 minutes to sign up for online payments and notifications for my own 4 children. If the online payment is not your preferred method of payment, you may still pay with cash or check. To keep in touch with the happenings at Dilworth, visit our website at dilworth.slcschools.org. Have a fantastic week!

We are successfully getting the year started thanks to all of your registrations and orders. The final date to order a Dilworth t-shirt, school directory, yearbook and emergency kit, if you haven't already, will be this Friday, September 5th. You can get a PTA registration form in the office. We hope every student will bring an emergency kit to their classroom so, if there is a community disaster, we will all be prepared to care for students. And don't forget to turn in your volunteer sign-up sheet. We will welcome volunteers all year long! Feel free to contact us with any questions.

PTA Storytelling Assembly
Thank you to a generous parent donation and PTA sponsorship of our Bill Harley Storytelling Assembly. The students (and teachers) were thoroughly entertained last week by a renowned musician and performer, Bill Harley. If you haven't heard about it from your student, be sure to ask! Bill Harley's materials, CD's and audio books, are available in the library or online at www.billharley.com.
Lunch Money
All lunch money should be given to Carolyn or Mr. Wright in the office, not the lunch room! If you send money with your child, be sure they know to take it to the office. We are strongly encouraging parents to pay for lunches online at mypaymentsplus.com for security, accuracy, and less work for Carolyn.
We appreciate all those who pay in advance and on time, so we don’t have to send out “past due” notices. Thank you for being flexible as policies change.

Principal's Message
Welcome back to school!! I am excited to be part of this amazing school. We had an assembly this morning which included introductions of new teachers and staff, as well as establishing and clarifying the expectations we have of our students.
I would like to remind everyone of our expectations for all parents and visitors regarding safety procedures. All adults who are working, volunteering, or visiting at Dilworth must wear an ID badge, which you can get when you check in at the front office. All adults who come into the building between the first and last bells of the day must check in at the office before preceding to their intended destination. These expectations have been set to ensure the safety of the students in our building. We really appreciate your cooperation and concern for our students' safety.
I am looking forward to seeing you at our back-to-school night tomorrow night, Tuesday, Aug. 26th.
Jared Wright
From our PTA Co-Presidents
We are looking forward to a new school year at Dilworth. We would love to have you volunteer to help in our wonderful PTA. We have so many programs for the students that can only happen if we have parents volunteer to help. There is still time to order a school shirt/sweatshirt, directory, and yearbook. You can get the order form for these items in the front office. We hope every student will bring their own emergency pack to their classroom so that, if there is a community disaster, we will be prepared to take care of students until their parents come to get them.
We will be at back-to-school night to help with any questions you may have about PTA.
Angela Fletcher and Liz Raybould
